Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the most common eye diseases, estimated to affect more than four million Americans over 40 — half of whom don’t even know they have the disease.  Incurable, it is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and the leading cause of blindness among African-Americans. In fact, glaucoma is six to eight times more common in African-Americans than Caucasians.  Fortunately, NuHealth’s ophthalmology team includes subspecialists with extensive experience providing care for patients with all types of glaucoma, and offering a variety of medical, laser and surgical treatment options to slow or prevent further vision loss.

Types of glaucoma treated include:

  • Angle Closure Glaucoma
  • Normal Tension Glaucoma (NTG)
  • Pediatric Glaucoma
  • Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
  • Secondary Glaucoma

Because glaucoma has no known cure, early detection is critically important.  NuHealth’s eye care specialists frequently provide free glaucoma screenings at Nassau University Medical Center, NuHealth Family Health Centers and community health fairs throughout the region.
