SURVIVORSHIP CELEBRATION HIV PROGRAM AT NUMC

Nassau University Medical Center’s HIV Program commemorated its 2nd Annual Survivorship Celebration on February 22, 2007. The event celebrated the survival of our HIV/AIDS infected patients and honored patients who have lived with the virus for over ten years. In addition to providing medical treatment and a range of mental health and social services to HIV infected patients and their families, the HIV Program team also has a mission to enhance patients’ quality of life through programs and events which now includes this increasingly popular annual event.

Among patients participating in a speakers’ panel at the celebration was a local Florist who had adorned the tables with lovely floral arrangements and other patients with red rose boutonnieres. His story of survival with the disease for over seventeen years was beyond inspiring to many. Another, who has had the virus for over twenty-one years, gave a heart-wrenching testimony about her triumphant journey through life and her current experiences as a sober mother of a 7 year old HIV negative son. Stories of overcoming obstacles were shared with all.

Later, the patient group, together with a dozen staff members, “brought the house down” as the Andre Phillips Band crooned selections including “I Will Survive” and Aretha Franklin’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

This very powerful and inspiring evening showcased patient empowerment through partnership with providers. HIV/AIDS infected patients need to feel validated, respected and loved and they felt all of that at the Survivors’ Celebration.
