Nassau University Medical Center was recently thanked by the New York Organ Donor Network for the hospital’s efforts in saving lives through organ and tissue donation.
Nassau University Medical Center Medical Intensive Care Unit staff referred in April a potential organ donor to the New York Organ Donor Network. “With the cooperation of the staff and the generosity of the patient’s family, the unfortunate death of a 47 year-old patient resulted in life saving transplants for three other persons,” said Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation. “Organ donation saves lives and in this case, the left kidney was transplanted into a 53 year old, the right kidney was transplanted into a 23 year old and the liver helped save a 55 year old,” added Mr. Gianelli. In addition, eyes, skin, bone and heart valves were also recovered for transplantation. There are more than 94,000 persons in the United States waiting for a donated organ.
