East Meadow, NY………….Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO, announces that Lynn Schaefer, PhD, neuropsychologist at the Nassau University Medical Center in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, has been invited to serve on a panel with the Nassau County Bar Association Surrogate’s Court Estates and Trusts Committee. Dr. Schaefer served on the panel with various judges and attorneys from Nassau County at the Nassau Academy of Law, where she discussed how the legal and medical communities define and assess mental capacity for an aging population in Nassau.

“It is an honor that Dr. Schaefer was invited and volunteered to serve on the Nassau Academy of Law panel entitled “Determining Capacity: It Can Make Your Head Spin”, especially at a time of an aging population on Long Island, with a rise in the diagnosis of psychological, psychotic and cognitive disorders, creating challenges for attorneys and physicians when confronted with the question of an individual’s diminished capacity.”

The three hour program on April 19, 2017 at the Nassau County Academy of Law, examined how with an aging population and a rise in the diagnosis of psychological and cognitive disorders, estate planners and litigators have their work cut out for them when deciding what to do when confronted with the question of an individual’s capacity. The panelists also discussed the best practices when representing a client with diminished capacity, using case studies and hypotheticals to define and assess capacity with practical tips and advice.
