East Meadow, NY, June 3, 2016 — Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO, announces that the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has received the Get With The Guidelines®-Resuscitation Bronze Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer cardiac arrests in the hospital.

More than 200,000 adults and children have an in-hospital cardiac arrest each year, according to the American Heart Association. The Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation program was developed with the goal to save lives of those who experience cardiac arrests through consistently following the most up-to-date research-based guidelines for treatment. Guidelines include following protocols for patient safety, medical emergency team response, effective and timely resuscitation (CPR) and post-resuscitation care. NUMC is granted this award for meeting specific measures in treating adult in-hospital cardiac arrest patients.

“NUMC is dedicated to helping our patients have the best possible outcome and continuing the implementation of the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation program will help us accomplish this by making it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis,” said Dr. Politi. “Congratulations to Dr. Amgad Makaryus, chair of the department of Cardiology, and his entire team for achieving this prestigious recognition.”

“We are pleased to recognize NUMC for their commitment in following these guidelines,” said Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. “Shortening the time to effective resuscitation and maximizing post-resuscitation care is critical to patient survival.”

To receive this GWTG – Resuscitation Bronze Achievement Award, the hospital must meet specific quality measures for 3 consecutive months at 85% or higher compliance on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the adult in-patients. NUMC will continue to strive to improve our care to hopefully receive higher distinctions in this area in the future!

“It is with great pride that I share this recognition that NUMC has received for the first time, the American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines – Resuscitation Bronze Achievement Award, for our accomplishments in the care of patients who suffer cardiac arrest in the hospital and also in maximizing their post-resuscitation care,” stated Dr. Amgad Makaryus. “This honor is a tribute to the great care delivered by our physicians, nurses, support staff, and specifically, the code team and the code committee (committee is led by collaboration between Dr. Kent Stephenson from the department of Cardiology and Dr. Leonid Rankov from the department of Medicine). I would also like to thank Stanka Petrovic, RN in the department of Cardiology for her continuing review, organization, and entry of all data relating to resuscitation and codes.”

Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation builds on the work of the American Heart Association’s National Registry of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation originally launched in 1999 and has collected in-hospital arrest data from more than 500 hospitals. Data from the registry and the quality program give participating hospitals feedback on their resuscitation practice and patient outcomes. The data also help improve research-based guidelines for in-hospital resuscitation.
