REFLECTS COMMITMENT TO EMS EDUCATION, SIGNALING UNPRECEDENTED JOINT PRIVATE AND PUBLIC VENTURE TO ESTABLISH NEW HOME FOR NASSAU COUNTY FIRE POLICE EMS ACADEMY, THE MOST UP TO DATE AND ONLY MUNICIPAL EMS TRAINING ACADEMY IN NASSAU COUNTY, DEDICATED TO ALL SEGMENTS OF THE EMS PROVIDER COMMUNITY
MOSENSON FAMILY DESIRE TO PERPETUATE LATE SON JEFFREY’S NAME AND HONOR HIM WITH LASTING TRIBUTE, REFLECTS STRONG COMMITMENT BY HOSPITAL AND COUNTY OFFICIALS TO MEDICAL EDUCATION FOR EMS PROFESSIONALS AND THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE
East Meadow, NY…Joined by Nassau County Executive, Edward P. Mangano, state, county officials, board of directors of the NuHealth System, Nassau County Fire Commission officials, David and Gayle Mosenson, Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced the opening of the Jeffrey Mosenson Center for Trauma and Emergency Medicine at the Nassau University Medical Center, signaling an unprecedented joint private and public venture to establish a new home for the Nassau County Fire Police EMS Academy on the second floor of the NUMC “B” Building. It is the only municipal EMS training academy in Nassau County dedicated to all segments of the EMS provider community and the only one of two institutions providing paramedic education.
“In a unique and well-intentioned opportunity, the Mosenson Family has fulfilled a commitment to raising funds for a training center for first responders in memory of their late son Jeffrey. It is unprecedented that a private donor raised significant funds to donate to NUMC in a tribute to a loved one, reinforcing our connections between first responders and NUMC, critical for NUMC’s future,” said Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System. “The Jeffrey Mosenson Center for Trauma and Emergency Medicine at the Nassau University Medical Center reflects a commitment to medical education and the support of the EMS community as a cornerstone of the hospital. EMS is a link in the partnership between the community and the NUMC whose mission it is to serve the community. Today’s opening is only the beginning of this joint endeavor and forges an even stronger commitment to EMS education and the health and safety of our residents and visitors to Nassau County,” added Gianelli.
“The Jeffrey Mosenson Center for Trauma and Emergency will enable us to continue to provide top-notch training to our EMS providers,” said Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano. “They save lives everyday and deserve to have the most up-to-date training facility, in a space that reflects their importance to the community. It is also a wonderful tribute to the legacy of Jeffrey Mosenson, who spent so much of his life helping others and saving the lives of those in need.”
In 2004, the Mosenson family had expressed a desire to perpetuate their late son Jeffrey’s name and honor him with a lasting tribute: “Our son Jeffrey Mosenson, who died in January 28, 2003, had dedicated himself as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), a volunteer with the Jericho Fire Department and other EMS agencies. He lived a full life in his short twenty years and he will continue giving back to the community with this lasting tribute in his memory, reflecting our strong commitment to education for first responders” said David and Gayle Mosenson, parents of the late Jeffrey Mosenson.
Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature, Peter Schmitt, commended the staff on their commitment to superior training for all segments of the EMS provider community, leading to the furtherance of the EMS education mission: “As the result of an unprecedented partnership between the public and private sectors to establish a lasting tribute in Jeffrey’s memory by the Mosenson family, this preeminent EMS facility in the region will greatly benefit our Nassau communities through superior paramedic education.”
Founded in 1978 at the then called Nassau County Medical Center, the Nassau County Fire Police EMS Academy was built by the staff to train EMS personnel under the direct control of the Nassau County Fire Commission in the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Nassau County Police Department Emergency Ambulance Bureau. The academy is responsible for the training of municipal EMS professionals as well as volunteer EMS professionals, ancillary healthcare providers and the public at large and is regarded as the preeminent EMS training facility in the region. Very limited space and conditions made it very difficult to meet the increased training needs of the county. “The Academy and its paramedic education program are regarded as the preeminent EMS training facility in the region. The new academy will enable us to expand the scope of our educational products to a larger segment of the community, for both, paid EMS professionals and volunteer EMS professionals as well as the public at large,” said Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director for the NuHealth System.
The academy, located in the entire 2nd floor of “B” Building, under the banner of the Jeffrey Mosenson Center for Trauma and Emergency Medicine, will include 8,000 square feet of space, with an expected expansion of an additional 3,000 square feet to finalize the project. The NuHealth System’s financial contribution to this project included $300,000 in addition to asbestos removal for the entire floor that totaled $60,000 and a sprinkler system for $50,000. The Mosenson Foundation raised a total of $700,000 and Nassau County contributed technical and logistical support to enable the project to move forward. In July 2008, final construction plans for Phase I of this project were finalized with funding having been secured. During October 2008, work began with demolition of the existing space in anticipation of the actual construction of the new academy, which took approximately one and a half years. A Nassau County capital plan to finish the three remaining classrooms at the academy has been approved, with the start of construction by fall 2010, in furtherance of the EMS mission.
“The co-directors of the Nassau County Fire Police EMS Academy, Steve Lenkofsky and Paul Napoli stated: “Without Art Gianelli’s financial expertise and executive oversight, this project would never have come to fruition, as Mr. Gianelli spearheaded this project while he was Deputy County Executive for Finance for Nassau County and continued to facilitate this project once he became President/CEO of the NuHealth System. This project has been thirty years in the making and has finally come to fruition with the joint cooperation of many entities, the culmination of much hard work by all parties and the determination of the Mosenson Foundation.”
“I am proud that, with the support of our board of directors, Nassau County Executive Mangano, former County Executive Suozzi, Nassau County Majority Leader Peter Schmitt, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, State Senator Carl Marcellino, former Assemblyman Robert Walker and Legislator Judy Jacobs, as well as the Nassau County Fire Commission, we were able to assist the Mosenson Family in bringing this project to a state of reality, through this joint public and private venture in fulfilling the Mosenson family’s desire to find a lasting tribute to their late son, Jeffrey,” concluded Mr. Gianelli.
