East Meadow, NY……….Nassau University Medical Center President and CEO, Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, along with mental health experts from Nassau University Medical Center, is offering tips for identifying and combating mental health issues today, October 10th, 2016 for World Mental Health Day.
World Mental Health Day (10 October) is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
“About a quarter of American adults suffer from some type of mental health problem each year,” said Dr. Victor F. Politi, President and CEO of Nassau University Medical Center. “But we can significantly improve mental health in the general public by increasing awareness about the early signs and symptoms, and getting the message out that screenings and treatments are readily available.”
Some of the early warning signs of a mental illness include:
· Feelings of extreme highs and lows
· Prolonged sadness or irritability
· Excessive fears / worries
· Social withdrawal
· Dramatic changes in eating or sleeping habits
· Strong feelings of anger
· Seeing or hearing things that aren’t there (hallucinations)
· Growing inability to cope with daily problems and activities
· Suicidal thoughts
· Confused thinking
· Numerous unexplained physical ailments
· Substance use
Nassau University’s Psychiatric Emergency Department is the only separate, self-contained emergency unit in Nassau County for those in acute psychiatric crisis. More than 3,000 patients each year receive treatment in our outpatient and inpatient substance-abuse programs. Nassau University Medical Center is actively working to bring important information on mental illness and addiction out into the communities we serve, and providing counseling services in our Family Health Centers and in our Primary Care Center.
