Nassau University Medical Center Opens New State-of-the-Art MRI Center

County Executive Blakeman, NHCC Chairman Bruderman Inaugurate $6.2 Million Facility with Latest Technology

A part of an ongoing modernization program for the county’s largest hospital and level one trauma center, Nassau University Medical Center has unveiled a new, state-of-the-art Magnetom Altea 1.5T MRI system that will serve thousands of patients each year. The new MRI has a smaller footprint, and a larger opening making it more comfortable for patients as well as the latest imaging technology. The redesigned $6.2 million center was funded, in part, by Nassau County. In addition to the imaging apparatus the center features a larger waiting room and new operator stations.

“Our patients deserve the best technology available and this new MRI Center is one of a number of upgrades we are making at NUMC because everyone deserves quality health care, regardless of their ability to pay. The County’s assistance in making this a reality will ensure that thousands more residents will have access to the latest imaging. That means better diagnosis and treatments that save lives,” said Nassau Healthcare Corporation Chairman Matthew J. Bruderman. NUMC is slated to open a new Cath Lab and expanded Dialysis Center in 2024. NUMC’s patient population is the most diverse in the county, with 70 percent utilizing Medicare or Medicaid.

The new Siemens MRI enhances a physician’s ability to diagnose medical conditions with its noninvasive imaging that employs the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, automation and accelerated imaging techniques that dramatically reduce exam times by up to 40%. The image quality is among the most advanced available today producing detailed pictures of the body’s internal structures. The MRI unit will be utilized for a wide range of patient needs including neurological, orthopedic, cardiac, abdominal and whole-body images.  The new system includes a feature that utilizes Turbo technology, which speeds the imaging time and allows multiple scans to be obtained simultaneously.

For patients, the opening of the new MRI offers a more comfortable environment during MRI tests, particularly for claustrophobic patients due to its open design. It also offers patients improved arm support, positioning aids, and noise reduction. Enhanced patient comfort and shortened scan times also mean patients are less likely to move during their exam, resulting in better quality images and fewer re-scans.

“NUMC is an irreplaceable healthcare resource for our communities. This new state-of-the-art MRI center is one of a number of ways that the county and hospital are working together to give residents the top notch care they deserve,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. In addition to facility upgrades, Blakeman and Bruderman have been advancing a series of reforms to ensure the hospital’s long-term financial sustainability.
