NASSAU COUNTY RESIDENTS TO RECEIVE FREE FLU VACCINES AT NUMC ON NOVEMBER 19 NOON

East Meadow, NY (November 18, 2015) – Nassau University Medical Center CEO & President Dr. Victor Politi MD, FACP, FACEP, will be joined by the hospital’s acting chief medical officer Victor J. Scarmato, MD, MBA, FACR, chief nursing officer Kathy Skarka, RN, MSN, CNA, and staff nurses who will be providing free flu vaccines to local residents to protect the spread of influenza and help save lives, Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 12 pm in the hospital’s main lobby.  Every year, thousands of Americans die from the flu and over 200,000 are hospitalized.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that anyone six months of age or older should receive an annual flu vaccine and when more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community.

Health officials insist that annual flu vaccines are the best protection against the flu and its complications and that once available it’s never too late or too early to get the flu vaccine. According to the CDC, it is estimated that about 44% of American adults and almost 60% of kids get the flu vaccine.  December and January is considered the height of flu season.  Common symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue.

Nassau University Medical Center is a 530-bed public teaching hospital that has been the primary source of medical care for millions of Nassau County residents for 80 years. The hospital treats approximately 73,000 emergency patients annually and its 80-plus outpatient specialty clinics handle more than 178,000 patient visits each year.
