CARLOS ALVAREZ, ACSW, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NUHEALTH’S INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH EQUITY, TO BE HONORED AT THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD’S
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that Carlos Alvarez, ACSW, executive director of the Institute for Health Equity, will be recognized by the Town of Hempstead as an honoree during National Hispanic Heritage Month on October 5th.

In a letter dated September 15, 2010, Kate Murray, Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead, wrote: “I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to be an honoree at the Town of Hempstead’s annual celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Congratulations! Please accept my heartiest congratulations on your personal and professional success and my deepest appreciation for your dedication and services to the Town of Hempstead community.”

In also congratulating Carlos Alvarez upon receiving this prestigious honor, Gianelli said: “On behalf of the NuHealth System, we extend our congratulations to you on your recognition during National Hispanic Heritage Month. It is a well deserved honor, in recognition of your outreach efforts in the various minority communities within the Town of Hempstead, by bringing needed screening services through the numerous health fairs that you have coordinated on behalf of the Institute for Health Equity.”

Carlos Alvarez, ACSW, executive director of the Institute for Health Equity received a bachelors degree from the College of William and Mary and a masters degree from the University of Chicago. Alvarez has spent 39 years in health care and public health education. In 2007 he became the founding executive director of Institute for Health Equity at NUMC. He has previously worked at Harlem Hospital and Medical Center, as the associate executive director/ambulatory care services as well as the executive director for the American Lung Association in Massachusetts and Queens, N.Y. Alvarez was born in Cuba and currently lives on Long Island with his wife.

The mission of the Institute of Health Equity is to address the disparities that exist in the health condition of the residents of the 33 federally designated, medically underserved areas of Nassau County through programs of outreach, education and services.

Alvarez, who was honored to have been selected to receive the recognition on October 5th, said: “It is truly an honor to be the recipient of the Town of Hempstead National Hispanic Heritage Month. I am most grateful and remain committed to continue the important outreach efforts by the NuHealth Institute for Health Equity in the local communities within the Town of Hempstead.”
