Each year, NUMC has the privilege of providing care to over 270,000 patients from diverse backgrounds and circumstances, which highlights our unwavering dedication to addressing the healthcare needs of our community. Notably, about 70% of our patients come from minority and lower-income communities, reaffirming our commitment to serving those most in need.
As a level-one trauma center, NUMC is fully equipped to handle emergencies, delivering critical, life-saving care to more than 67,000 emergency room patients annually. NUMC also houses the Fire Fighters’ Burn Center with a dedicated Burn Unit and Burn Clinic, as well as the only multi-patient Hyperbaric Chamber on Long Island. This provides specialty care to patients with burns, wounds, and inhalation injuries. NUMC is also the only hospital in all of Manhattan, Queens and Long Island to offer hydro-birthing as a natural alternative for low-risk mothers.
In addition to our emergency services, NUMC offers a wide range of specialized care programs designed to address the unique needs of our patients. From advanced cardiac care to innovative oncology treatments, our specialized clinics and departments are staffed by experts who are passionate about providing the best possible care to our community. NUMC is an academic center with over 300 residents recognized by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education with full accreditations in multiple specialties.
The Detox Unit at Nassau University Medical Center offers a safe haven for individuals withdrawing from alcohol, opiates, and other addictive substances, providing comprehensive care within our recently renovated 10th-floor units. Here, our dedicated multidisciplinary team, comprising physicians, psychologists, counselors, social workers, nurses, nutritionists, and clergy is a beacon of hope to those grappling with chemical dependency.
Additionally, the construction of a new Cath Lab marks a significant milestone for NUMC and the communities we serve. This facility not only enhances the quality and efficiency of our care but also contributes to revenue generation. Nassau University Medical Center is home to Long Island’s largest inpatient psychiatric treatment center, capable of caring for more than 180 patients daily, including those with the severest mental disorders. The Psychiatric Emergency Department is the only separate, self-contained emergency unit in Nassau County for people in acute psychiatric crisis. Our Hospital also serves as a clinical campus for medical, nursing and paramedic students. Recognized nationally as a model for skilled nursing facilities, the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility is the county’s only public skilled nursing facility, rehabilitation center and state-of-the-art outpatient renal dialysis services in a bright, comfortable new setting
NUMC has been a source of comfort, service and pride to its surrounding community and beyond. NUMC provides health care for all of the needs of Nassau’s residents:
- When Avianca Flight 52 crashed on Long Island January 25, 1990 with 158 people on board, the majority of injured patients were transported to Nassau University Medical Center (then Nassau County Medical Center); Nurses and physicians from NUMC went to the scene of the crash to assist with all aspects of care.
- NUMC was the primary receiving hospital for the Long Island Rail Road shooting on December 7, 1993.
- In 2010, an earthquake caused devastating damage to the island of Haiti. NUMC sent a team of physicians and nurses to assist with all of the health care concerns after the earthquake.
- After Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012 NUMC and A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Center opened its doors to patients from damaged hospitals, nursing care facilities, and to those who needed special medical assistance due to lack of electricity and assisted with medical care at evacuation centers located throughout the Island.
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, NUMC was the county’s primary overflow center for patients who contracted the virus.
