Insurance Access Program Information

Program Information

The Affordable Care Act now allows many New York consumers who are currently uninsured, to gain access to affordable health insurance. Consumers may purchase health insurance through the New York State of Health: The Official Health Plan Marketplace. Eligible consumers need to complete an application in order to enroll.

Key Facts

  • Open enrollment began October 1, 2013 and coverage can begin as soon as January 1, 2014.
  • The New York State of Health Marketplace is mainly for people who are under 65, live in New York, are uninsured and citizens of the United States, and don’t have health insurance through a job.
  • Public health insurance like Medicaid and Child Health Plus, will also be available through this Marketplace.
  • Health insurance available through the Affordable Care Act is comprehensive, offering a wide range of benefits, and eligible consumers may have a variety of options and plans to choose from.
  • The New York State of Health Marketplace is federally approved to offer federal tax credits to help lower health insurance costs for many New York residents. These credits can be advanced to make it easier to purchase insurance coverage.
  • If you are uninsured and sign up for insurance by March 31, 2014, you avoid paying an income tax penalty for the 2014 tax year.
