NuHealth and Nassau University Medical Center offer an exceptional medical education experience for candidates with excellent academic performance and passion about their future in medicine. We appreciate your interest in joining us and hope the following information on qualifications and eligibility for both U.S. and international medical graduates will help you decide to apply. Please note that application policies for specific residency programs may be different than those cited below.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE OSTEOPATHIC RESIDENTS INCLUDING TRI (TRADITIONAL ROTATING INTERNSHIP) APPLICANTS:

The ACGME has issued a proposed change to the common program requirements, which may go into effect on July 1, 2016. The proposed language is:

All prerequisite post-graduate clinical education required for entry into ACGME-accredited residency programs must be completed in ACGME-accredited residency programs, ACGME International-accredited residency programs, or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited residency programs located in Canada.

All applicants should think carefully about this requirement and its effect on prerequisite training, and your future training plans.

U.S. Medical Graduates

Most of our clinical departments utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We also participate in the National Resident Matching Program.

Qualified applicants are invited for an interview with faculty and are afforded the opportunity to visit their department of interest. Candidates eligible for appointment to the accredited residency program at Nassau University Medical Center must be:

  • Graduate of accredited/approved medical school or
  • Graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  • Able to begin training by the start date on appointment letter

The following are required components of your ERAS application:

  • Curriculum vitae that demonstrates continuous activity since graduation from medical school
  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Medical school transcript
  • Dean’s letter (Medical Student Performance Evaluation)
  • Personal interview
  • USMLE Scores for Part 1 & 2

All information must be submitted before an application can be reviewed. Please note that we will ONLY accept ERAS applications that are ELECTRONICALLY TRANSMITTED to our institution. Please do not send any materials via mail, fax, or e-mail. Those materials received outside of the ERAS system will not be forwarded to the program.

International Medical Graduates

International graduates must contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for their application materials and eligibility requirements. Paper applications will not be accepted. We only accept ERAS applications from International Medical Graduates and they must meet the following criteria:

Foreign national physicians seeking J-1 sponsorship to enroll in programs of graduate medical education (GME) or training in the United States must fulfill a number of general requirements. At a minimum, applicants must:

  • Have passed Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE(TM)) [and/or an acceptable combination of components of the former Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the Medical Sciences (FMGEMS), the National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®) Part sequence, or the Visa Qualifying Examination (VQE)];
  • Hold a valid Standard ECFMG Certificate at commencement of training;
  • Hold a contract or an official letter of offer for a position in a program of graduate medical education or training that is affiliated with a medical school;
  • Provide a Statement of Need from the Ministry of Health of the country of most recent legal permanent residence, regardless of country of citizenship. This statement provides written assurance that the country needs physicians trained in the proposed specialty and/or subspecialty. It also serves to confirm the applicant physician’s commitment to return to that country upon completion of training in the United States, as required by Section 212(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended.
