When your kidneys are unable to perform due to renal disease, toxic substances (impurities and wastes) and excess fluid from the blood can build up, eventually leading to death, if not removed. Our unit offers two forms of dialysis: Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis. Hemodialysis is a method of diverting blood from the patient to a dialysis machine, where it is filtered before being returned to the body. Most patients require three treatment sessions each week, each of which lasts 3-4 hours.
Peritoneal Dialysis is a form of dialysis that is performed at home after being thoroughly trained by our staff. Patients attend a monthly clinic at the outpatient center.
At the NuHealth Dialysis Center at A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility, a caring, highly experienced professional staff provides personalized, state-of-the-art outpatient renal dialysis services in a bright, comfortable new setting. Everything about the NuHealth Dialysis Center has been designed to provide maximum convenience and comfort for our patients. Conveniently located in the heart of Nassau County, it features plenty of parking and spacious, windowed rooms. Each station has its own flat-screen video monitor and access to a substantial library of feature films, educational videos and other entertainment options to keep patients occupied during treatment. In addition to a comfortable waiting area, there is also a patient lounge with vending machines that offer real, healthy food choices, not just snacks.
For our patients’ convenience, NuHealth Dialysis Center is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 5:45 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. These expanded service hours make it possible to provide nearly 700 treatments per week…enough to serve 232 patients with typical treatment protocols.
Our multidisciplinary treatment team provides both care and support for patients undergoing dialysis. Each team is led by a board-certified nephrologist, registered nurses, certified hemodialysis technologists, a licensed social worker, dietician and transplant coordinator. All team members provide additional support to help patients cope with the loss of kidney function.
