East Meadow, NY. …….Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO, announces that it is with great pride that the von Tauber Institute for Global Psychiatry at Nassau University Medical Center awards the 2017 von Tauber Award for Global Psychiatry to Saul M. Levin, M.D., M.P.A.  Dr. Levin is currently the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

“We congratulate Dr. Levin who has spent his entire career leading governmental agencies to make the US healthcare system function more effectively and more equitably,” stated Dr. Politi.   “Prior to assuming his role at the APA, Dr. Levin served as Interim Director of the District of Columbia Department of Health (DCDOH). On the Board of the D.C. Health Exchange Board he successfully led the effort to ensure that residents of the District of Columbia had access to a full range of substance abuse and mental health services.”

In 2012, as Senior Deputy Director of the DCDOH’s Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration he promoted substance abuse prevention efforts and assured that increasing number of individuals received treatment services. At the American Medical Association he served as Vice President for Science, Medicine, and Public Health, where he oversaw programs related to evolving health delivery systems, such as in the areas of prevention and health care disparities.

“Psychiatry is extremely fortunate to have in Saul Levin a leader whose vast experience in healthcare delivery and deep commitment to healthcare quality and equity gives us a clear vision for professional action in which we can have confidence and pride,” added Dr. Politi.

Nyapati R Rao, MD, MS, DLFAPA,  von Tauber Chair, NUMC Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Director of the Institute AND Jacob Sperber, MD, Associate Director, von Tauber Institute will present Dr. Levin with his award at today’s (1/18/17) lecture at 1PM in NUMC’s amphitheater.

Olga von Tauber and her husband Robert von Tauber were leaders in the Long Island medical community.  As the first woman director of a State Hospital in New York, Dr. Olga von Tauber was a pioneer for progressive values in psychiatry.  Her bequest to the NUMC Department of Psychiatry was used to establish the Institute in her name, in order to support the behavioral resilience of the people of the Long Island communities she so long served and cared for, while also creating a lasting memorial to her exemplary values and work. Previous recipients of the award have been Margaret Abraham, PhD, Dinesh Bhugra, MD, and Francis G. Lu, MD.
