THREE OF NUMC’S MIDWIVES AWARDED TOP QUALITY CARE “4 CORE BEST PRACTICE” IN AMERICAN COLLEGE OF NURSE-MIDWIVES BENCHMARKING PROJECT

East Meadow, NY…..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces that three of the midwives who practice at the Nassau University Medical Center within the department of obstetrics and gynecology, have been awarded “4 Core Best Practice” in the American College of Nurse-Midwives 2011 Benchmarking Project. The “4 Core Best Practice” perinatal measures include induction of labor, primary cesarean, episiotomy and breastfeeding before discharge. The “4 Core Best Practice” designation has been designed to acknowledge practices achieving nationally established benchmarks for physiologic birth. These four measures are harmonized with the National Quality Forum and the Joint commission perinatal quality measures.

“The three midwives affiliated with NUMC, Karen Jefferson and Martine Jean-Baptiste, both  from JJB Midwifery, and Kristen Leonard are to be congratulated for their commitment to achieving best practice for the top quality care they provide to all their patients, vital to the quality management of midwifery practices nationally. You are one of 29 practices out of 203, that have been named “Best Practice in the 4 Core Category”, achieving all four benchmarks, a well deserved recognition,” said Gianelli.

The Quality management Section of the Division of Standards and Practice and the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) provided the results from the 2011 ACNM Benchmarking Project. These results represent midwifery practice data collected by participating practices during 2011 and submitted to ACNM in spring of 2012. The purpose of the ACNM project is professional self-maintenance and quality improvement. For the calendar year 2011, 203 practices submitted data. The aggregate data included a total of 83,400 births and the work of nearly 900 certified nurse midwives and certified midwives. The data includes over 69,000 vaginal births and 2859 trials of labor after cesarean. Over 75,000 hospital births, 2000 homebirths and 4500 birth centers are represented in the 2011 survey. Participation in the benchmarking project is a valuable tool for quality management for individual practices.

C.D. Hsu, MD, MPH, FACOG, chair of the NUMC OB/GYN department added his congratulations: “The award of top quality of care of NUMC affiliated midwives is of great honor and with the best practice to the patients. It also demonstrates a great team practice between midwives and collaborating obstetricians at NUMC.”
