THE LONG ISLAND SURGICAL WEIGHT REDUCTION CENTER AT NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER OFFERS SURGICAL OPTIONS FOR THOSE SEVERELY OVERWEIGHT

HIGHLY TRAINED MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM HELP TO PROVIDE COMPLETE CARE FOR CHRONICALLY SEVERELY OVERWEIGHT, WITH MOST TYPES OF INSURANCE
ACCEPTED, INCLUDING MEDICAID HMO

East Meadow, New York…Almost everyone has tried to lose weight at some point in their lives.  But if you or someone you know is among the many chronically severely overweight (100 pounds or more), who have tried dieting, exercising and group support, you might be interested in the services of the Long Island Surgical Weight Reduction Center at the Nassau University Medical Center.

While the Long Island Surgical Weight Reduction Center awaits its upcoming designation as a Center of Excellence, Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System indicated: “The Long Island Surgical Weight Reduction Center offers surgery as an option for those who are severely overweight, or those with medical conditions that have worsened with increasing weight.  We’ve brought together a highly trained team of surgeons, nutritionists, internists, psychiatrists, plastic surgeons and technicians to provide complete care for patients, with most types of insurance accepted, including Medicaid HMO. These experts supply constant individualized service in a private setting.”

The Nassau University Medical Center department of surgery provides various successful options through its Long Island Weight Reduction Center.  The following procedures, laparoscopic gastric bypass, gastric band (lap band), laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection and laparoscopic revisional surgery are offered by highly skilled surgeons with many years of surgical experience in addressing weight reduction programs for the severely overweight and obese.
Gastric Bypass:  creation of a small gastric pouch and bypassing segment of small intestine.  Done either open op laparoscopically.
Gastric Band:  placement of a band around the stomach to create restriction.  Done laparoscopically.
Gastric Sleeve Resection:  resection of part of the stomach and fashion it into a tube, which restricts the food intake, and is done in super morbidly obese patients.  This is a relatively new procedure and many plans don’t cover it.  It is done laparoscopically.
Laparoscopic Surgery: Surgery performed through tiny holes in the abdomen, with the help of a camera and special instruments.

Educational seminars, free and open to the public, are held the second Wednesday evening of every month from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in room 867, on the 8th floor of NUMC. During the seminar, various topics are discussed, including the various types of surgeries, who is a candidate for bariatric surgery, pre-operative and post-operative as well as the benefits and risks of surgery.
