FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
STROKE SCREENING AND AWARENESS DAY AT NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER ON MAY 19TH, 2008
East Meadow, New York……Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Corporation, announces that Nassau University Medical Center, a New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Primary Stroke Designated Hospital, will host a Stroke Screening and Awareness Day on Monday, May 19, 2008 between 1:00pm and 4:00pm in the NUMC Auditorium. Mr. Gianelli indicates that: “NUMC is working with the American Stroke Association to increase awareness of stroke risk factors and suggest ways to modify or reduce your risks.”
“It is also your chance to meet an Emergency Room Doctor and hear a lecture on Stroke, Risk Factors and what to do in case of a Brain Attack. This will be followed by a FREE Stroke Risk Assessment, which will include risk factor screening, carotid bruit assessment, dietary counseling, smoking cessation information and a personal Action Plan which will be given to you by the healthcare professionals at the program.”
NUMC and The American Stroke Association want Nassau County residents to learn the warning signs of stroke:
Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
If you notice one or more of these signs, don’t wait. Stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 or your emergency medical services. Get to a hospital right away! Time lost is brain lost!
For more information about FREE stroke risk factor screenings at the Nassau University Medical Center, call Mary Ellen Samis, RN in the Department of Neurology at 516 572-3107. No appointments are required. Please use the Carmen Avenue entrance at NUMC.
