FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
STEVEN WALERSTEIN, MD, FACP, AND NUMC TEAM TO BE FEATURED DURING CHANNEL 2 EARLY SHOW MEDICAL MYSTERIES SEGMENT ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25TH
NUMC TEAM SAVED YOUNG WOMAN’S LIFE BY DIAGNOSING RARE DISEASE AND ARRANGING FOR LIVER TRANSPLANT
East Meadow, NY……..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation, announced that Steven Walerstein, MD, FACP, and the Nassau University Medical Center team will be featured on the Channel 2 Early Show segment on Friday, September 25th. The Medical Mysteries segment is based upon a newly released book written by New York Times columnist, Lisa Sanders, MD, entitled “Every Patient Tells a Story”. The book is based upon Dr. Sanders’ column called “Diagnosis” which appears in the New York Times Sunday Magazine Section and which featured a patient cared for by NUMC’s team in 2007. The New York Times Magazine article that featured Dr. Walerstein appeared on June 17, 2007.
The patient in her early 20’s, came to the Nassau University Medical Center with a multi-organ failure of undetermined cause. She was severely ill and days away from death without a diagnosis. The NUMC team, after consultation with Dr. Walerstein, diagnosed her as having an unusual and rare case of Wilson’s disease, which is 100% fatal without an immediate liver transplant. The NUMC team made arrangements for immediate transfer to a liver transplant center where a liver transplant was arranged just in the nick of time.
“Patient is now fully recovered and will also be featured in the Channel 2 Early Show segment, illustrating the depth of diagnostic capabilities available at NUMC as well as the high quality care provided by our NUMC team,” stated Gianelli.
