APPOINTMENT IS TESTAMENT TO DR. WALERSTEIN’S COMMITMENT TO THE CONTINUED GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION AT THE NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER AND REFLECTS NUMC’S ROLE AS A MAJOR ACADEMIC CAMPUS
East Meadow, NY….In a letter dated October 23, 2008, and signed by B.L. Kaplan, D.O., Chief Academic Officer of the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, (AUC), Steven J. Walerstein, MD, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Medical Director at the Nassau Health Care Corporation, (NHCC) received notification of his appointment as AUC Site Director and Clinical Professor for the AUC School of Medicine.
Nassau University Medical Center, part of the NHCC health system, is a teaching institution, training hundreds of residents and medical students to obtain their clinical experience while serving diverse populations in a community hospital with a public mission.
In his letter, B.L. Kaplan, D.O. stated: “I am pleased to confirm your appointment to the AUC facility as a Site Director/Clinical Professor. We appreciate your contributions to the success of our students and look forward to continuing to work with you on our mutual goal of educating caring and competent physicians.”
In his role as medical director, Dr. Walerstein is responsible for the oversight of the provision of medical care throughout the NHCC. Working closely with the clinical chairs and the Department of Quality Management, he reviews the quality of care provided and identifies opportunities for improvement. He also works collaboratively with the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education in assuring the highest quality training programs for medical students and residents. Prior to being appointed medical director for the Nassau Health Care Corporation, Dr. Walerstein served as Vice President and Associate Medical Director for New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York from August of 2002 through July of 2005.
Dr. Walerstein served as Chairman and Program Director for the Department of Medicine at Nassau University Medical Center from September 1999 until March 2002. Dr. Walerstein graduated in 1979 from the six year bio-medical program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College with a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, and a Doctor of Medicine. He went on to complete his postgraduate training in the primary care internal medicine program at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
Dr. Walerstein has received numerous university appointments. Currently, he serves as Associate Professor for the Health Sciences Center at Stony Book. Dr. Walerstein has also served as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine for Weill-Cornell Medical College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Walerstein has earned numerous professional and educational awards and honors. Most recently, he received the Laureate Award from the New York State Chapter of the American College of Physicians for 2006. Dr. Walerstein was awarded the Best Faculty Attending Award by the New York Methodist Hospital Department of Medicine for the 2002-2003 year, the Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s Department of Medicine for the 2002-2003 year, and the Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s Department of Medicine awarded Dr. Walerstein the Excellence in Teaching award in 1990.
In accepting his appointment as AUC site director and clinical professor, Dr. Walerstein said: “I am a delighted to be joining the faculty of the AUC School of Medicine and look forward to continuing our renewed commitment to medical education by maintaining a major academic campus that is a training site for over 280 residents, several hundred medical students and a clinical campus for three medical schools.”
Mr. Gianelli added: “Our Board of Directors joins me in expressing admiration for Dr. Walerstein’s commitment to the continued growth and development of medical education at the Nassau University Medical Center. He continues to play a prominent role in GME on Long Island, with our long-term commitment to serve as a major teaching center for AUC. Over the next few years, we envision the transformation of the NUMC campus for the benefit of the AUC students, our other medical students and residents, our faculty and the community at large.”
