State Budget Reporting Exposes New York’s Shameful Attack on Long Island’s Healthcare

NUMC’s Pleas for $41 Million in Capital Funding Ignored by State Since April 2024

(EAST MEADOW, NY) – Nassau Healthcare Corporation, the public benefit corporation that manages Nassau University Medical Center and A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility, released the following statement today in response to Newsday’s reporting that State officials are pledging $40 million for the hospital in conjunction with the illegal takeover of the NHCC Board of Directors.

In April 2024, NHCC submitted a detailed application for $41 million in capital funding through the State Transformation Grant Program, administered by the New York State Department of Health (DOH). Despite NUMC’s clear eligibility and urgent need, the DOH stonewalled the request, leaving the hospital without critical resources to maintain and improve its infrastructure. The state’s sudden pledge of $40 million—conveniently timed with its hostile takeover attempt—reeks of manipulation and bad faith.

NHCC President, CEO, and Chief Legal Officer Megan Ryan minced no words: “Governor Hochul and her Department of Health have shown their true colors: they’re obsessed with power, not people. The state’s so-called ‘pledge’ of $40 million is a cruel joke, considering they ignored NUMC’s $41 million funding request for over a year. This isn’t aid—it’s a calculated ploy to dress up their illegal power grab as benevolence. New York State has deliberately choked NUMC’s resources, slashing state aid from $190 million in 2019 to nothing in 2024. The DOH’s endgame is clear: shutter NUMC, gut critical healthcare services for hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders, and sacrifice our community’s well-being on the altar of political ambition. This $40 million is no lifeline—it’s a slap in the face, and Long Islanders deserve better than this disgraceful charade.”
