SOPHIA SHARFSTEIN, MD, APPOINTED AS STROKE DIRECTOR OF NUMC’S DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY

East Meadow, NY……Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces that Sophia Sharfstein, MD, a neurologist with decades of experience in treating stroke patients, has been appointed as the stroke director in the department of neurology, responsible for overseeing care to those who suffer a new or recurrent stroke.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Sharfstein, a well-respected and extremely qualified neurologist with a wealth of experience and impressive achievements, who will further the department’s goals of providing the best care to all our stroke patients. She will play a vital role in ensuring the highest quality of life-saving care,” stated Gianelli.

Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director at the NuHealth System, also welcomed Dr. Sharfstein: “We are pleased to have a leader of Dr. Scharfstein’s experience and expertise join the NuHealth System and take over the responsibilities as director of the stroke service. The chair of the department of neurology, Satish Kadakia, MD, said: “We welcome Dr. Sharfstein to our department. She will play a vital role in ensuring care in an environment devoted to quality and compassion in serving a vulnerable population. Dr. Sharfstein will bring a unique perspective, particularly with respect to issues affecting stroke patients.”

Dr. Sharfstein, a resident of Woodbury, has completed Neurology residency and fellowship in stroke and cerebrovascular disorders at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She is board-certified in both neurology and vascular neurology. Dr. Sharfstein has been selected by her peers to be included into Best Doctors in America database since 2007 until present time. She has also been selected by International Organization of Healthcare Professionals as Top Neurologist in Brooklyn, in the year 2011, while working at SUNY Downstate Medical Center as a director of stroke unit.
