East Meadow, NY……….Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces that Shyni Charley, RN, BSN, of the Nassau University Medical Center, and a nurse for 23 years and in nursing leadership for 6 years as the surgical intensive care unit and post-anesthesia unit nurse manager, has received the 2013 Nurse.com Nursing Excellence Award given to exceptional nurses in the region. The Giving Excellence Meaning Award (GEM) was given to 30 finalists in six categories, from thousands of nominations received by the Gannett Healthcare Group. Ms. Charley received her award in the volunteerism and service category

In extending his congratulations, Gianelli added: “Our best to Ms Charley who is worthy of this recognition and a credit to the nursing profession, underscoring the value of what nurses do each and every day and the importance of their many contributions to helping their patients. The recognition reflects all that is good in the nursing profession as well as her commitment to improving the lives of others through volunteerism and service, making a difference in the care of her patients in the community, at home and abroad.”

Eileen P. Williamson, RN, MSN, senior vice president and chief nurse executive of Gannett Healthcare Group presented the awards at the GEM celebration: “Nurse.com is celebrating 25 years as a company and recognition of nursing excellence has been a part of our mission. Tonight is a special night of showcasing the best of the best in nursing as we honor this year’s outstanding finalists and their accomplishments. Congratulations to our regional finalists.”

As a nurse manager at NUMC, Ms. Charley is responsible for fifty nurses, and all the patients in the SICU and PACU,  assuring the proper staffing of the units, encouraging ongoing education for the staff and responsible for the high quality of care. Her commitment reaches beyond the hospital walls. As an active member of her church and community, she works tirelessly to help others, by volunteering at soup kitchens, running annual clothing and food drives for the local homeless shelters. She organizes health fairs at the shelters where she educates the women regarding proper nutrition. She has made mission trips to Guyana through the Lighthouse Project and has raised funds to purchase sewing machines so that the villagers could make clothing and help to support their families. In addition, she has been to Africa where she has helped dig wells for clean, safe drinking water.

“Our entire nursing department congratulates and is proud that Ms. Charley has received this well deserved award. Nurse Charley was recognized in the volunteerism and service for giving of self in outstanding humanitarian and/or heroic ways by providing nursing care, skills and expertise in outreach to the community, either at home or abroad, to improve the lives, well-being and healthcare of others,” said Kathy Skarka, RN, MSN, executive vice president for nursing and CNO at the NuHealth System.

Ms. Charley said: “To be recognized with this honor by Nurse.com is wonderful and I am grateful and humbled to be able to work with such a remarkable group at NUMC and in the community.”
