PAUL C. LIU, MD, APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY DIVISION AT NUMC, RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MANAGEMENT AND OVERSIGHT OF THE CARE OF WOMEN WITH OVARIAN AND UTERINE CANCER

CANCER SURGEON WITH ETENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF OB/GYN AND WITH NATIONAL PROMINENCE IS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL RESEARCHERS IN THE NY REGION TO CONDUCT GENE THERAPY RESEARCH FOR ADVANCED STAGE OVARIAN CANCER


East Meadow, NY….Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation, announced the appointment of Paul C. Liu, MD, as director of the gynecology/oncology division in the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at the Nassau University Medical Center where he will be instrumental in creating a new division to provide services for women with ovarian and uterine cancers.

Steven J. Walerstein MD, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Medical Director at the Nassau Health Care Corporation added:   “Dr. Liu is a wonderful addition to the Department of OB/GYN where he will lend his expertise in the field of gynecologic oncology and will coordinate the expansion of this service.

Prior to joining NUMC, Dr. Liu was the Medical Director and the Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at South Nassau Communities Hospital. Liu is a cancer surgeon with national prominence.  In 2006, he was featured by the Discovery Channel for his pioneering work in assisting the first epithelial ovarian cancer patient in the US to achieve motherhood, after cancer treatment.  Dr. Liu has also published extensively in the area of gynecologic oncology.  Some of his work has contributed to changing the standard of how gynecologic cancer patients are treated.
            
Dr. Liu is a member of a prestigious national cooperative research group known as the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG). Through the GOG many of his patients have access to NIH sponsored clinical trials. Dr. Liu was also one of the original researchers in the New York Metropolitan area to conduct gene therapy research for advanced stage ovarian cancer.  Dr. Liu received his BA from Cornell University and subsequently his JD from Rutgers University School of Law. Dr. Liu was a practicing attorney prior to pursuing a career as a cancer surgeon. After obtaining his MD from The Chicago Medical School, Dr. Liu completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian in New York and his fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Pennsylvania.
