OLUBUKOLA KESHINRO, RN, NOMINATED BY NUMC’S NURSING DEPARTMENT FOR 2013 NASSAU- SUFFOLK HOSPITAL COUNCIL NURSING EXCELLENCE AWARD

EAST MEADOW, NY….Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, proudly announces that Olubukola Keshinro, RN, department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), has been nominated by the nursing department for the 2013 Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council Nursing Excellence Award.

“Congratulations to Ms. Keshinro on being the nominee of the 2013 Nurse of Excellence Award at the Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council, an extraordinary honor for an ultimate professional, who provides the highest level of quality care for all her patients. Her commitment and compassion to our patients and their families are exemplary, making her an asset to NUMC and to the nursing profession,” stated Gianelli. “Her dedication and selflessness during her medical missions to Nigeria embody the very best of nursing and she is a great role model for young professionals in the nursing field.”

The Hospital Council maintains this recognition program because the registered nurse is truly the core of any hospital. Ms. Keshinro was nominated for achieving significant accomplishments in her area of practice in the psychiatry department, for her medical missions in Nigeria, for serving as a mentor and inspiring staff, for providing assistance to patients and for fostering a positive image of nursing.

Kathy Skarka, MSN, RN, NuHealth’s senior vice president/CNO, congratulated Ms. Keshinro during the nomination presentation: “I am honored to have the privilege to work with Ms. Keshinro, a compassionate   nursing professional and role model, and am proud to have her represent our nursing department as this year’s nominee.”

Our nominee graduated first from Kennedy King College in Chicago in 1999 with an Associate’s Degree. She then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from LIU Brooklyn in 2009, and is presently enrolled in an MSN/Family NP program at Lehman College, expecting to graduate in 2013. She has been a member of NUMC’s staff, as a psychiatry float nurse, for five years.

Ms. Keshinro is a founding member of the Nigerian Nurses Association (NNA) in New York. Under our nominee’s leadership and guidance, the NNA held community health fairs, offered screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Women are taught self breast examination and men are taught self testicular examination.

In 2007, our nominee’s NNA aligned with other nursing associations to begin doing medical missions. Through her organization, our nominee has traveled to Nigeria every year since then.  A clinic was set up and screenings for hypertension, breast cancer, HIV, and diabetes were done. The people were educated in the necessary (and obtainable) lifestyle changes for a healthier life. She addressed such topics as nutrition, hygiene, and family.

Ms. Keshinro returned to Nigeria in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Each year before she goes, she spends her time here in New York seeking donations. She accepts donations of money, clothing, health supplies, and non-perishable foods from friends and colleagues. Recently, she has been seeking out donations from pharmacies. Physicians in Nigeria can prescribe drugs for their patients, but if the people cannot afford to pay for the drugs they will not fill the prescriptions. In addition to her work in Nigeria, our nominee volunteers at the Nigerian Embassy in New York City. There she meets with newly immigrated Nigerians and gives classes on health, nutrition, and family. She informs them of community resources available, and encourages them to stay in contact with her. She refers them to a Nigerian community church in Rosedale.

Ms. Keshinro’s own words best describe why she is the 2013 Nurse of excellence Award nominee: “I realized that giving back was something that I never want to stop doing.”
