NYAPATI R. RAO, MD, MS, NUHEALTH’S CHAIR OF PSYCHIATRY AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATE AWARENESS DAY AWARD

East Meadow, NY…..Nyapati R. Rao, MD, MS, chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Nassau University Medical Center, has been selected as the first recipient of the annual American Medical Association – International Medical Graduate (AMA-IMG) Awareness Day Award.

Vijaya Apparedy, MD, chair of the AMA-IMG governing council, stated in a letter to Dr. Rao, dated November 5, 2012, “It is with great pleasure and honor that I inform you that you were selected as the first recipient of the annual AMA-IMG Awareness Day Award. On behalf of our selection committee, we congratulate you for being the first recipient of this historic award and we recognize the many ways you have elevated the status of IMGs through your work in the American Psychiatric Association and the AMA. Writing and editing two editions of the AMA-IMG workforce paper and chairing a very successful IMG summit are just two initiatives that make you deserving of this award.”

The AMA is celebrating IMG Awareness Day on December 6, 2012, in New York this year, instead of in Chicago as the previous site for the celebration, in order to highlight and spread awareness about the many contributions IMGs make to American medicine.

“The IMG Section of the AMA created the annual IMG Awareness Day Award to honor a person who has demonstrated commitment to elevating the status of IMGs, furthering the goals of the AMA-IMG Section and advocating on behalf of IMGs.  Please congratulate Dr. Nyapati Rao for being the first recipient of this historic award, among his many contributions to IMG issues, specifically for writing and editing two editions of the AMA-IMGs workforce paper and for chairing a very successful IMG Summit for the AMA,” stated Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director for the NuHealth System.

Dr. Rao indicated: “I am honored to have been selected for this prestigious award and look forward to working with the AMA-IMG to continue furthering the valuable work and the goals of advocating on behalf of International Medical Graduates. Any resident or faculty member of NuHealth, if interested is welcome to attend the conference.  There will be a symposium following the award, with a reception to complete the evening.”
