NUMC’S RADIOLOGY RESIDENCY PROGRAM RECEIVES MAXIMUM FULL FIVE-YEAR CONTINUED ACCREDITATION FROM ACGME
Tremendous accomplishment resulting from commitment by NUMC radiologists to provide excellent training for radiology residents and high level of care to patients
East Meadow, NY – Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that the Nassau University Medical Center’s radiology residency program had received the maximum full five year continued accreditation, during a survey by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Victor J. Scarmato, MD, chair of the radiology department at NUMC, was notified by the ACGME that the NUMC radiology residency program had demonstrated substantial compliance with the ACGME’s Requirement for Graduate Medical Education.
Gianelli congratulated Dr. Scarmato and Nalini Kanth, MD, radiology residency program director, on receiving reaccreditation and said: “Congratulations to the entire radiology team on achieving this tremendous accomplishment of the maximum full five-year accreditation. Dr. Scarmato and his team are to be commended for the excellent training that they provide for our radiology residents and for the superb level of care provided to our patients.”
The ACGME site visit took place on June 23, 2009 with the approximately date for the next survey in October of 2014.
“This is absolutely wonderful news for the radiology department and for NUMC. Based on this thorough rigorous examination of the program by ACGME field surveyors, a report is made to the Residency Review Committee. Compliance indicates as close as you can get to a perfect interval (5 year) accreditation. We are very proud of this accomplishment which demonstrates the quality training program that our residents receive in order to prepare them as radiologists for the benefit of the community,” stated Dr. Scarmato.
Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs proudly commended the radiologists for their success: “Congratulations on achieving a full 5-year accreditation. This achievement is based on every aspect of the program from attending input, resident satisfaction, and delivery of care, organization, administration support and scholarly activity. I believe we can all take pride in this accomplishment, which reflects on the leadership of the department, the efforts of the faculty and residents as well as the leadership of Dr. Katarina Lane, dean of academic affairs at NUMC.”
George W. Miner, MD, member of the NuHealth board of directors said: “Congratulations to all on the 5-year approval of the radiology residency program. It demonstrates what hard work, dedication and teamwork can do for the NuHealth system in terms of providing quality care to our patients and the quality education to our house staff. Receiving a five-year approval from the RRC implies that the residents have expressed their strong approval of their training program and their work/learning environment and this speaks to the excellent job done by all in assuring the high caliber of the program.”
