NUMC’S NYAPATI RAO, MD, MS, CHAIR OF THE PSYCHIATRY & BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT APPOINTED MEMBER OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM COMMITTEEE FOR THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION

East Meadow, NY… Nyapati Rao, MD, MS, chair of the psychiatry and behavioral sciences department at Nassau University Medical Center, has been appointed as a member of the scientific program committee for the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Rao’s term will begin at the annual meeting in May 2011 and will continue through to May 2014.

John M. Oldham, MD, president elect of the American Psychiatric Association wrote in a recent letter to Dr. Rao, “The association’s many accomplishments are made possible through the generosity of members like you. I hope you will accept the opportunity to service our profession. I look forward to our continued work together.”

Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, added his congratulations: “We are delighted that you have been invited to serve on the scientific program committee for the American Psychiatric Association. The American Psychiatric Association (APA), founded in 1844, is the world’s largest psychiatric organization.  It is a medical specialty society representing more than 38,000 psychiatric physicians from the United States and around the world. Its member physician’s work together to ensure humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental disorders, including intellectual disability and substance-related disorders. APA is the voice and conscience of modern psychiatry. APA Members are primarily medical specialists who are psychiatrists or in the process of becoming psychiatrists.

Dr. Rao came to NUMC from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he was Director of Psychiatric Residency Training and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry. After graduating from Kurnool Medical College in India, Dr. Rao completed his residency training in psychiatry at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center and obtained a Masters of Science from the Robert Wagner School of Public Service at New York University.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with added qualifications in geriatric psychiatry.  He is the author of several papers concerning psychiatry education, and his work in improving the education of international medical graduates is recognized nationally.  He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, and the American College of Psychiatrists.  Dr. Rao was the recipient of the George Tarjan Award from the American Psychiatric Association and the Educator of the Year award by the Association for Academic Psychiatry. His interests lie in cultural psychiatry, psychiatric workforce issues, and quality of clinical care
