NUMC’S NALINI KANTH, MD, AND STEVEN LEV, MD, SELECTED AS FELLOWS FOR THE CLINICAL QUALITY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM BY THE GREATER NEW YORK HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION AND THE UNITED HOSPITAL FUND

East Meadow, NY…Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System announced that two of Nassau University Medical Center’s radiologists, Nalini Kanth, MD, and Steven Lev, MD, have been selected as fellows for the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program by the Greater New York Hospital Association and the United Hospital Fund.

The United Hospital Fund and Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) plan to enhance the existing quality infrastructure through the training and education of clinicians in quality improvement and patient safety. The Clinical Quality Fellowship Program, a 15-month structured program teaches physicians skills needed to lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Participants learn from a faculty of local quality improvement leaders and engage in hands-on implementation of quality initiatives at their home facilities.

“Congratulations to Drs. Kanth and Lev upon being selected for the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program following a competitive evaluation process. It is a testament to their skills as radiologists and their commitment to quality initiatives that they were selected to participate in this exciting initiative,” said Gianelli.

Dr. Steven Lev has been a neuroradiologist at Nassau University Medical Center for the past fifteen years. He is both director of neuroradiology and associate professor of clinical radiology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He attended Princeton University and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and furthered his training in radiology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and at New England Medical Center Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He enjoys teaching both residents and students and he is a chairperson of the NUMC medical student clinical course committee.

Dr. Lev was selected because he leads the department of radiology QA program and he has helped to implement several important initiatives concerning quality and patient safety, recently exhibiting three QA storyboard posters at the annual meeting of the Radiology Society of North America (RSNA). “I anticipate that my participation in the NYS Clinical Quality Fellowship Program will provide me with the additional education, tools and insights required to ensure continuation of the high levels of quality we strive for at the Nassau University Medical center,” said Dr. Lev.

Nalini Kanth M.D., D.A., B.R., is the program director for radiology residency at Nassau University Medical Center. She completed her medical school education and obstetrics/gynecology residency in India. She is board certified in radiology, having completed her radiology residency training at NUMC. She has done a National Institute of Health funded post-doctoral research fellowship in thoracic imaging at UCSF, San Francisco and a cross-sectional imaging fellowship from Stony Brook, NY. She is active in the Long Island Radiological Society, having been the education chair last year and currently holds the position of treasurer. She is also on the education subcommittee of the American Roentgen Ray Society and the American Society of Emergency Radiology. She has been actively involved in promoting the scholarly activities in her department with publications, presentations and educational exhibits at national meetings. She has been the recipient of grants from the Association of University Radiologists for the Agfa Radiology Management program, and Philips Academic Faculty Development program as well as from the American Roentgen Ray Society for the Clinical Educators Development program.  Dr. Kanth has been selected through a competitive process to participate in the Clinical Quality Improvement Fellowship given by the GYHNA.

“In overseeing quality improvement projects for my residents, an understanding of the core concepts  is important from the ACGME standpoint, and also important for medical student education. NUMC has medical students from three institutes rotating through the radiology department,” said Dr. Kanth. “I would like to educate medical students regarding the importance of these concepts. As a radiologist, I interact daily with multiple other medical disciplines and believe that training in quality would allow me to work throughout the hospital and utilize the skills I obtained.”

“Both, Dr. Kanth and Dr. Lev were selected because they know that patient safety, quality improvement, patient centered care, and interdisciplinary team work are core concepts increasingly important for hospitals to adopt as strategies to improve outcomes,” said Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director for the NuHealth System.
