NUMC’S MARIANNE FRIERI, MD, PHD, INVITED TO LECTURE AT THE SOUTH EASTERN ALLERGY, ASTHMA AND IMMUNOLOGY SOCIETY’S ANNUAL MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 16-17, 2011 IN ALABAMA

East Meadow, NY…..Marianne Frieri, MD, PhD, chief of allergy and immunology, dept. of medicine at the Nassau University Medical Center, has been invited to lecture at the Southeastern Allergy and Immunology Society Annual Meeting, to be held at the Point Clear Resort in Alabama on September 16th and 17th, 2011. Dr. Frieri will present two lectures, one on an “Update on Asthma Pathogenesis from Birth to Adulthood” and the other lecture entitled “Vitamin D and Allergic Disease”.

Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director for the NuHealth System, congratulated Dr. Frieri on having been invited to present at the prestigious Southeastern Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society: “You are to be commended for supporting the mission of the SEAAIS, for promoting understanding of recent advances in biomedical science for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease and for facilitating the exchange of ideas and information among physicians.”

In the early 1940’s a small group of allergists from the Southeastern United States met to found an educational organization with the purpose of discussing the latest advances in allergy and immunology. The organization was also founded to provide a forum for allergy fellows-in-training to present their research work. This venue was not only enlightening to the physicians in practice, but also served to provide fellows-in-training experience in presentation skills.

The status of Southeastern Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society members may be either active, affiliate (practicing outside the Southeastern States), honorary or emeritus.  The states included in the Southeastern Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society are the as follow: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia and Louisiana.  The District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are also included in the Southeastern area.

Dr. Frieri completed her post-graduate residency training in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph Hospital an affiliate of Northwestern University Medical Center in 1980 and completed a fellowship in Allergy Immunology in the NIAID at the National Institute of Health in 1983, prior to becoming the Director of Clinical Immunology and Allergy Immunology Training in Nassau University Medical Center.  She is triple board certified in internal medicine, allergy immunology and diagnostic laboratory immunology and Professor of Medicine and Pathology at SUNY Stony Brook.  Dr. Frieri is a professor of medicine and pathology at the State University of NY at Stony Brook, and on the faculty at New York Institute of Technology, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.
She served on the ACAAI Board of Regents from 1994 until 1997, and on the JCAAI Board of Directors from 2001 until 2005.  She currently serves on several AAAAI committees and the ACAAI committees for allergy/immunology training director’s planning, basic and clinical immunology, membership recruitment, pregnancy, women in allergy and women’s health.  She was selected by ACAAI and American Medical Association for the ACGME RRC, for Allergy Immunology, 2006-2012, and by ACAAI for the US Gloria Advisory Board in 2008-2009.  She was honored with the ACAAI 2006 Distinguished Fellow Award and 2008 Distinguished Service Award and received Women in Allergy Award in 2002 and from the AAAAI in 2003. Dr. Frieri is past president of the Long Island Allergy and Asthma Society, 1995-97 and currently serves on the Board of Directors and CME committee. Her many other tributes included the CSEA Women in Local Government Recognition Award and Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition.

I thank the SEAAIS for allowing me this wonderful opportunity and I look forward to sharing my acquired knowledge on asthma pathogenesis and vitamin D in allergic and autoimmune diseases,” said Dr. Frieri.
