NUMC’S LYN WEISS, MD, SERVES ON “AAPM&R’S CHOOSING WISELY TASK FORCE” HELPING TO SUPPORT EFFECTIVE CARE CHOICES

East Meadow, NY……….Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth’s President/CEO, announces that Lyn Weiss, MD, Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), has served on the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s “Choosing Wisely Task Force”, helping to publish a list of procedures and tests that physicians and patients should review when discussing effective care choices. The “Choosing Wisely Task Force” is an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation.

“Congratulations to Dr. Weiss for having been selected to serve on the “Choosing Wisely Task Force”. This important initiative was started by the ABIM Foundation to help physicians and patients engage in conversations to support physician efforts to help patients make smart and effective care choices and make decisions about the most appropriate care,” Stated Dr. Politi.

To spark these conversations, leading specialty societies have asked their members to create lists of “Things Physicians and Patients Should Question.” These lists are evidence-based recommendations that should help facilitate discussion between doctors and patients to help make wise decisions about the most appropriate care based on a patient’s individual situation.
The Choosing Wisely campaign will bring tremendous value to the doctor-patient decision-making process. Each topic is presented with a small summary as well as a reference; the objective is to trigger a dialogue and it should be clear that the final decision is up to the physician.

Dr. Weiss indicated that her work on the task force relates to the innovative work in her practice: “Our goal in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation medicine at NUMC is to offer the best evidence-based care to our patients. The topics of the task force will be a resource and guide for our clinicians to have a conversation about routine diagnostic tests and treatments, especially with spine and pain medicine.”
