FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
NUMC’S KENNETH J. STEIER, DO, MPH, MHA, PARTICIPATES ON U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION’S PANEL ON RADIOLOGIC DEVICES
ONLY PULMONARY PHYSICIAN ON USFDA PANEL OF SELECTED EXPERTS
East Meadow, New York… Kenneth J. Steier, DO, MPH, MHA, NUMC pulmonologist and Patient Safety Officer for the Nassau University Medical Center, was selected during a national search to serve on the FDA’s Respiratory Drug and Device Advisory Panel. When an additional need arose last month for a pulmonologist on a radiology advisory panel, Dr. Steier was selected to serve on that panel, as well. Dr. Steier was a voting member on the panel meeting of this radiology panel recently in Washington, DC, along with clinicians and researchers from across the country, assembled to set quality standards for new computer-assisted detection devices.
The Food and Drug Administration selects Expert Advisory Panels to advise the FDA concerning approving new medical drugs and devices, and developing criteria for the approval process. The radiological advisory panel meets as needed to review new radiological drugs and devices. Recently several new “computer-assisted” detection devices have been developed to assist radiologists in identifying abnormalities on radiological studies, such as mammograms and CT scans.
Dr. Steier is also the director of medical education and residency director for the rotating internship and osteopathic internal medicine residency. Dr. Steier graduated from NY College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983 and completed a rotating internship as well as an internal medicine residency and a pulmonary/critical care fellowship. He is triple-board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine. Dr. Steier also has Master’s degrees in both Public Health and Health Administration, and is currently enrolled in a Master’s of Business Administration (“MBA”) program.
As Patient Safety Officer, Dr. Steier oversees patient safety throughout NUMC and serves on the Joint Commission Leadership Team. He is chair of the important medication safety committee and vice-chair of the pharmacy and therapeutics committee and medical director of the pulmonary care unit.
In addition to his responsibilities at NUMC, Dr. Steier has several federal appointments and has achieved national recognition. Recently, Dr. Steier was appointed by the President of the American Osteopathic Association to the Council on Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions, which oversees residency training nationally.
Dr. Steier was chosen by the NYCOM graduating class of 2005 as the “Preceptor of Year” and has previously been chosen by interns and residents as “Teacher of the Year.” He also serves as a clinical assistant dean for NYCOM.
