KENNETH H. HUPART, MD, FACP, NUMC’S CHIEF OF ENDOCRINOLOGY, INVITED TO SPEAK AT ANNUAL MEETING OF U.S. ENDOCRINE SOCIETY

East Meadow, NY……..Kenneth H. Hupart, MD, FACP, chief of endocrinology at the NuHealth System/Nassau University Medical Center, has been invited to speak about the supply and demand for endocrinologists in the United States at the ENDO2012, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, in Houston, Texas. Dr. Hupart will make a related presentation this coming weekend to the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology and Metabolism. He will discuss the project he is engaged in with collaborators Col. Robert Vigersky, Dr. Andrew Stewart and researchers from the Lewin Group.

“It has been nearly a decade since there has been an analysis of the supply of endocrinologists available in our country and the need for these doctors by the U.S. population. My committee has been working with  health care  researchers from The Lewin Group, in order to understand how the need for endocrinologists in the United States, now and in the foreseeable future, matches the supply of doctors to care for patients with endocrine and metabolic diseases,” stated Dr. Hupart. “Endocrinologists care for patients with very commonly occurring conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis which have been increasing in prevalence. During the last ten years, there have been a number of factors that have changed, which have increased the rates of this disease in our nation. This is due to the aging of the baby boom generation, higher rates of obesity, and a change in the ethnic and racial makeup of the U.S. population.”

In this country, about 270 adult endocrinologists and fewer than 100 pediatric endocrinologists are trained every year.  Additionally, if health care reform in the United States is successful, many more individuals will have insurance and improved access to medical care. This will increase the need for doctors to care for their medical problems.
