NUMC’S KEN STEIER, DO, MPH, MHA, SELECTED TO SERVE AS A U.S. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HEALTH RESOURCES SERVICES ADMINISTRATION

Dr. Steier, DO, MPH, MHA, Dean of Academic Affairs/Patient Safety Officer, at Nassau University Medical Center, has been selected to serve as a U.S. Federal Government Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) grant reviewer for 2008. Dr. Steier has been an approved HRSA grant reviewer since 1998, often serving in the lead role as Panel Chair. This is considered a federal appointment, and panel supporters are given a Certificate of Appreciation from HRSA for their participation.

Arthur A. Gianelli in congratulating Dr. Steier on this prestigious appointment, said: “You are to be congratulated for your participation as a grant reviewer for the HRSA.. It is a well-deserved honor and we are confident that your role overseeing the residency programs at Nassau University Medical Center will be an asset while serving on this nationally recognized panel.” The United States Federal Government, through the Health Resources Services Administration, provides grant support for primary care residency programs (family practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics) across the country. These grants are awarded based on quality of the residency program, applicant history of grant success, feasibility, and innovation. In order to determine which applicants to fund, HRSA assembles a team of experts in residency training from several major Academic Medical Centers. The total amount of the awards granted varies from year to year, but averages approximately $20 million.

In his role as Dean, Dr. Steier oversees the medical education of 280 residents along with dozens of third and fourth year medical students from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Stony Brook School of Medicine. He is chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee. Dr. Steier is also the Director of Medical Education and residency director for the Rotating Internship and Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency.

Dr. Steier graduated from NYCOM in 1983 and completed a rotating internship as well as an Internal Medicine Residency and a Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship. He is triple-board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Steier also has Master’s degrees in both Public Health and Health Administration, and is currently enrolled in a Master’s of Business Administration (“MBA”) program.

As Patient Safety Officer, Dr. Steier oversees patient safety throughout NUMC and serves on the Joint Commission Leadership Team. He is chair of the important Medication Safety Committee and Vice-chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He is also Medical Director of the Pulmonary Care Unit.

In addition to his responsibilities at NUMC, Dr. Steier has several Federal Appointments and has achieved national recognition. He is a member of the Food and Drug Administration’s Panel on Respiratory Drugs and Devices, which reviews new drugs and medical equipment submitted to the FDA for regulatory approval.  Recently, Dr. Steier was appointed by the President of the American Osteopathic Association to the Council on Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions, which oversees residency training nationally.

Dr. Steier was chosen by the NYCOM graduating class of 2005 as the “Preceptor of Year” and has previously been chosen by interns and residents as “Teacher of the Year.” He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Dean for NYCOM.
