Diabetes is a disease that impairs the body’s ability to process sugar, fat and protein in food.  It affects millions of Americans, and is affecting an increasing number of people because it is often brought on by many of today’s diets that are high in sugars, starches and fat, and by life-styles that lack physical activity.

“Untreated diabetes can contribute to a variety of serious health complications including diseases of the heart, kidneys, nerves and vascular system that can shorten your life.  A coordinated approach to disease management is required in order to help control diabetes and prevent complications.  These interventions can save your life, limbs and vision and protect your overall wellness,” said Kenneth H. Hupart, MD, FAACP, Chief of Endocrinology at NUMC.
