NUMC’S DRS. HAJAR AND GOLOVYAN WIN FIRST PLACE POSTER PRESENTATION AWARD AT NY CHAPTER OF AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS’ SCIENTIFIC MEETING
East Meadow, NY………….Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) internal medicine department resident, Rabab Hajar, MD, in conjunction with American University of the Caribbean student alumnus, Dimitriy Golovyan, MD, won the first place poster presentation award at the New York chapter of the American College of Physicians’ Annual Scientific Meeting, held in Albany, NY, on August 24, 2012. Their first place winning poster was entitled “Atrial Septal defect Causing Underestimation of Mitral Regurgitation in a Severely Symptomatic Patient”.
Sanjay Doddamani, MD, FACC, FASE, chair of cardiology at NUMC, expressed his pride for the residents as well as that of the program directors and administration: “Please join me in congratulating Drs. Hajar and Golovyan for an outstanding effort in research and for presenting their poster in the student category at the ACP annual meeting. They will have another opportunity to present at the national ACP meeting in San Francisco, California in April 2013.”
Joining in congratulating the residents upon winning the prestigious first place award, Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director at the NuHealth System, added: “This is the ultimate honor for residents and students in internal medicine. The awardees, as well as their mentors are to be congratulated for their achievement and to be thanked for the recognition brought to NUMC.”
During their case presentation, Drs. Hajar and Golovyan determined that transesophageal echocardiography can play a critical role in identification of subtle intracardiac lesions and the assessment of patients with dyspnea on exertion that is unexplained by other modalities.
A missed ASD may impact appropriate and timely management of patients with symptomatic mitral regurgitation. Delayed treatment may result in right outflow track remodeling and lead to residual pulmonary hypertension.
