NUMC’S DIVISION OF ENDOCRINOLOGY LAUNCHES “”LUNCH AND LEARN”” PROGRAM FOR EMPLOYEES WITH DIABETES OR PREDIABETES
In seeking to improve the well-being of Nassau Health Care Corporation employees, Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO, announced the launch of a “Lunch & Learn” program for employees with diabetes, prediabetes, a family history of diabetes or risk factors for diabetes. The program, headed by Kenneth Hupart, MD, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at Nassau University Medical center, will meet every Wednesday in the NUMC’s Auditorium starting on December 19th, 2007 at 11:30 AM.
“While all of us at NUMC can take pride that our work will improve the health of our neighbors in our communities, it is important that we do not neglect the health of those providing healthcare. By educating the NUMC community and getting out of the hospital for a weekly walk, we can take positive steps in that direction,” said Mr. Gianelli.
Dr. Hupart added: “We are facing an epidemic of diabetes and prediabetes in this country. Excellent work in recent years has demonstrated that there are actions we can all take that will decrease the likelihood that we will suffer from diabetes or its side effects as we age. We encourage our employees to take advantage of this valuable program which will include a 30-minute discussion and a one mile walk around the campus.”
Topics expected to be covered during the weekly program include an overview of diabetes; high and low blood sugars; exercise and weight control; carb counting and label reading; healthy plate dining; hypertension; medication; foot care; kidney disease; eye disease; emotional issues and coping skills and new diabetes research findings.
