NUMC’S DIVISION OF ENDOCRINOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM, RECEIVES CONTINUED FULL ACCREDITATION UNTIL 2013 AND APPROVAL TO INCREASE FELLOW COMPLEMENT TO THREE

East Meadow, NY…Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, proudly announced that the Nassau University Medical Center’s division of endocrinology fellowship program has been awarded a three year accreditation and approval to increase the fellow complement from two to three, effective July 1, 2011. This renewed accreditation is the result of a recent review by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee (RRC) for internal medicine.

“We extend our congratulations to the division of endocrinology, under the leadership of Kenneth H. Hupart, MD, FACP, for receiving three year accreditation for the fellowship program, as well as the approval of an additional fellow to the program, for a total of three fellows. The accreditation for the division of endocrinology at NUMC shows the continuous efforts to achieving the high quality of care already provided to our patients and expert teaching to our resident by our clinical staff,” said Gianelli.

“I am very proud of the endocrinology team here at NUMC for receiving a continued three year accreditation by the internal medicine RRC. I also recognize this outcome is the result of a group effort. Thank you to the department of academic affairs, the department of medicine and the residency program in internal medicine for your support and help in achieving this best of possible results,” said Dr. Hupart. “I continue to appreciate the professionalism of the academic enterprise at NUMC and the valuable contributions by all members of the endocrinology faculty.”

Focused on the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases affecting adults, internal medicine is one of the hospital’s busiest departments. Our subspecialists are frequently called upon by physicians both inside and out of Nassau University Medical Center to help solve the most complex diagnostic puzzles, including those where multiple illnesses or multiple organs are involved. In addition to helping patients manage a broad range of acute and chronic illnesses on an outpatient basis, NUMC’s internal medicine subspecialists are on the frontline of inpatient care. Although diabetes is the most common endocrine disease in the United States, there are other disorders that affect the glands that produce hormones essential for growth, development, reproduction and homeostasis. In addition to providing central leadership for NuHealth’s Zaki Hossain Center for Hypertension, Diabetes & Vascular Disease, the division of endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism at Nassau University Medical Center diagnoses and treats the complete spectrum of other diseases and disorders affecting the endocrine system. These include: adrenal diseases, calcium metabolism disorders, high cholesterol and other lipid disorders, osteoporosis, pituitary disorders and thyroid disorders. In addition, NuHealth’s endocrinologists serve as important members of multidisciplinary teams in pediatrics, urology and women’s care, diagnosing and treating such conditions as: testicular disorders (including low testosterone), ovarian disorders (including polycystic ovaries), menstrual diseases and menopause and growth disorders (including obesity).
