NUMC’S CHRISTOPHER LOW, MD, WINS FIRST PRIZE IN NATIONAL SENIOR RESIDENTS PLASTIC SURGICAL CONFERENCE
WINNING PAPER ENTITLED “SPINAL RECONSTRUCTION USING A FREE VASCULARIZED FIBULA GRAFT”, IN COLLABORATION WITH DR. THOMAS DAVENPORT OF THE LONG ISLAND SURGICAL GROUP
East Meadow, NY… Christopher Low, MD, chief resident in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Nassau University Medical Center, has received the first prize in the National Senior Residents’ Conference of all plastic surgical programs in the United States. His paper was entitled “Spinal Reconstruction Using a Free Vascularized Fibula Graft” and was completed in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Davenport of the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. The plastic and reconstructive surgery residency program at NUMC is overseen by the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, training three residents each year.
Roger L. Simpson, MD, MBA, FACS, director of plastic and reconstructive surgery and program director of plastic surgery at the Nassau University Medical Center and a member of the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group had high praise for Dr. Low’s excellent resident achievements: “We are extremely proud of all of our residents’ accomplishments and their productivity in scholarly activity. Dr. Low will continue his post-graduate training with an additional year of fellowship in hand and microsurgery. His compassion for patients and his love of teaching junior residents and students is apparent in his daily activities.”
Dr. Low completed medical school at the New Jersey UMDNJ School of Medicine in 2004 and was selected for the prestigious AOA Honor Society. He went on to complete his full training in general surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. He will complete his plastic surgical training in 2011 at NUMC. Dr. Low has used his combined general surgery and plastic surgery education to care for these critical patients in addition to educating general surgical residents and medical students in the fine points of this care. Dr. Low has been a contributor to scholarly activity. He became most interested in trying to prevent soft tissue pressure injuries in patients admitted to the hospital. In conjunction with a radiologist, Dr. Low put together a study using sonography to assess pre-clinical soft tissue injury. This investigative work was immediately accepted by the Plastic Surgery Research Council for presentation in May 2010.”
Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, congratulated Dr. Low on his achievement in winning first prize at the National Surgical Conference: “We are delighted with Dr. Low’s paper submission and accomplishment. He is a significant asset to the specialty of plastic surgery and to the patients for whom he provides excellent care on a daily basis. Congratulations to Dr. Low and to Drs. Simpson and Davenport who mentored him and provided him with continued success in his current training.”
“Dr. Low showed a passion for our specialty from the very beginning of his training. He enjoyed the strict attention to detail so important in the transition from general surgery to plastic surgery. He applied himself with tremendous energy to all aspects of our specialty, from minor plastic surgical cases to the most complicated cleft lip and palate reconstructions,” added Dr. Simpson.
Dr. Low stated: “I am truly honored to be recognized at the nation’s Senior Residents Plastic Surgical Conference. This award is a testament to the commitment by Drs. Simpson and Davenport as well as the NuHealth administration, to promote quality care and to provide the residents and fellows with superior training designed to enhance our interest in our specialty even more.”
