NUMC’S CHAIR OF PSYCHIATRY AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, NYAPATI R. RAO, MD, MS, ELEVATED TO FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PSYCHIATRISTS
East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that Nyapati R. Rao, MD, MS, chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Nassau University Medical Center has been elevated to Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists.
Membership in The College is limited to 750 participating psychiatrists who have demonstrated outstanding competence in the field of psychiatry, and who have achieved national recognition in one of the following fields: clinical practice, research, academic leadership, and teaching. New members must be nominated by Fellows or members of The College who are personally familiar with their work and career.
Fellowship is based on ongoing commitment to the work and ideals of The College. Four Members of The College must nominate a candidate for elevation to Fellowship. The Membership Committee reviews applications and submits recommendations to the Board of Regents, which makes the decision whether to elevate an individual to Fellow. It looks for active involvement in The College; active contribution to the work of The College; and a sustained and substantial contribution to the field or to the community.
“We are pleased that Dr. Rao has been elevated to Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists,” stated Gianelli. “Dr. Rao’s commitment to scholarly research and his unwavering interest in recruiting, retaining and enhancing culturally and linguistically competent mental health professionals, makes him the ideal leader to receive the honor bestowed on members who have made significant contributions to ACP and to the field of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.”
Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, added his congratulations: “Under the leadership of Dr. Rao, the department of psychiatry has achieved excellence in patient care, scholarly activity and community service. This award is a reflection of his leadership and is also a testimony of the quality team in his department”.

Dr. Rao came to NUMC from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he was Director of Psychiatric Residency Training and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry. After graduating from Kurnool Medical College in India, Dr. Rao completed his residency training in psychiatry at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center and obtained a Master’s of Science from the Robert Wagner School of Public Service at New York University. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with added qualifications in geriatric psychiatry. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, and the American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Rao currently resides in Massapequa.
