NUMC’S BREAST IMAGING CENTER RECEIVES THREE YEAR AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RADIOLOGY GOLD SEAL OF ACCREDITATION ON NEW DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT

ACCREDITATION AFFIRMS NUHEALTH’S COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF IMAGE QUALITY AND PATIENT SAFETY

East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, proudly announced that the Nassau University Medical Center’s Breast Imaging Center as well as its mobile mammography van have been awarded a three year term of accreditation as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used in the early detection and diagnosis of breast disease in women. The accreditation for the mammographic imaging services of the breast imaging center runs from February 22, 2011 through July 21, 2013.

“My congratulations to NUMC’s department of radiology, under the leadership of Victor Scarmato, MD, for the renewal of the breast center’s accreditation for a three year term. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety, underscoring our commitment to providing the highest level of care for women being screened in early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases,” said Gianelli.

Dr. Scarmato added: “I join Mr. Gianelli in commending the Breast Imagine Center staff on their achievement. Accreditation is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.”

During the review: image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous improvement. The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

In the summer of 2010, the Breast Imaging Center underwent a major technological upgrade.  Two state of the art digital imaging units were installed in the department and a third unit was installed on the mobile van.  A brand new ultrasound and bone densitometry unit was installed as well making the breast imaging center the most technologically advanced in the region.
