NUMC’S ANNA GASPARYAN, MD, CHIEF RESIDENT OF GENERAL SURGERY, AWARDED FIRST PLACE IN THE NASSAU SURGICAL SOCIETY’S AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS DAY
East Meadow, NY… Anna Gasparyan, MD, chief resident of general surgery, at the Nassau University Medical Center, is the first place winner of the Nassau Surgical Society, Long Island/Brooklyn Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Clinic Day in December 2010. Dr. Gasparyan won first place in the general surgery category with her poster titled “Helicopter Transport of Trauma Patients in a Suburban Environment” in which she was mentored and assisted by L.D. George Angus, MD, director of trauma in the NUMC department of surgery. NUMC was one of many hospitals that participated in ACS Clinic Day, among which included, Stony Brook University Medical Center, Maimonidies Medical Center, and Peninsula Hospital.
In a letter dated January 26, 2011, the Nassau Surgical Society officials applauded Dr. Gasparyan for receiving the first place award in the general surgery category at the ACS clinic day, “It is the pleasure of the members of the Nassau Surgical Society to award you $200 for an outstanding poster. We wish you well in the future and congratulations.”
Glenn R. Faust, MD, chair of surgery at NUMC congratulated Dr. Gasparyan on her award, “We are very proud of Dr. Gasparyan’s accomplishments. She is a role model for residents here at NUMC as well as a valuable resource to our community.”
The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice. The College is governed by a 22-member Board of Regents, which includes the ACS President. The board is elected by a geographically balanced and specialty-representative Board of Governors. On the local level, Fellows of the College are organized into 102 chapters. There are 65 chapters in the United States, 2 in Canada, 3 in Mexico, and 32 in other countries around the world. The College has numerous committees whose members are top surgical specialists in their fields. These committees study particular aspects of surgery and make recommendations for improvement in these areas
Anna Gasparyan, MD, is one of three chief residents in general surgery at the Nassau University Medical Center. Dr. Gasparyan will begin a fellowship in vascular surgery at Englewood Hospital in New Jersey starting in July 2011. Dr. Gasparyan has won several awards during her residency, including “Resident Teacher of the Year” in 2010 and “Outstanding Research Award” in 2009. In 2008 she won first place in the ACS Clinic Day and in 2009 she won second place in the Murray Friedman Resident Competition. She has also served as a resident council co-president from 2008-2009.
“I am truly honored to have been recognized and received this award by Nassau Surgical Society at the American College of Surgeons at clinic day. This award is a testament to my mentor Dr Angus, the department of surgery at NUMC as well as the NuHealth administration, to promote quality care and to provide the residents and fellows with superior training designed to enhance our interest in our specialty even more,” said Dr. Gasparyan.
