East Meadow, NY…….Proudly sporting a bright red jacket, heart patient-survivor and Go Red ambassador Ms. Frances Larocca from East Meadow was joined by another heart survivor Ms Shirley Gough from Uniondale at Nassau University Medical Center, East Meadow to take part in the Go Red for Women Campaign to fight heart disease.

Until now, “heart disease in women has been totally under recognized and neglected” explained Mr. Arthur Gianelli, President and CEO of Nuhealth’s Nassau University Medical Center who also underscored the fact that more women die of heart disease than the next six causes combined. Dr. Rosalind Watman, director of women’s heart health at Nassau University Medical Center reiterated the need for screening blood pressure and cholesterol periodically to prevent the more than 400,000 deaths that occur in women each year from cardiac arrest. Eating right is an important start. A heart healthy diet does not have to be devoid of flavor or taste and can be nutritionally balanced said dietician-intern Jaime Mass who was on hand to educate those who attended the morning’s event.

Mr. Larry Slatky, the chief operating officer said, “It is important that our employees take home this prevention message, especially since we have more women in our work force”. Nassau University Medical Center and the North Shore-LIJ health system recently partnered to bolster the department of cardiology with cutting edge resources and new physician leadership in an effort to improve cardiac care including new programs in heart failure and implantable defibrillator therapy.

Chairman of cardiology, Dr. Sanjay Doddamani exclaimed that the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women day was an opportunity for patients, doctors, nurses and the public to focus on prevention and to create awareness about this killer disease in women.  More information is available at www.aha.org or 516 296 4949.
