NUMC RECEIVES CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION FROM THE NY ORGAN DONOR NETWORK FOR SAVING LIVES THROUGH ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION
East Meadow, New York…..Nassau University Medical Center was recently presented with a certificate of appreciation, by the New York Organ Donor Network, in recognition of the hospital’s efforts in saving lives through organ and tissue donation.
Nassau University Medical Center surgical intensive care unit staff, referred in May 2011, a potential organ donor to the New York Organ Donor Network. “With the cooperation of the staff and the generosity of the patient’s family, the unfortunate death of a patient resulted in life-saving transplants for four other persons,” said Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System. “Patient’s liver gave a new lease on life to a 58-year old male, right kidney gave a 14-year-old male a renewal on life, left kidney saved the life of a 46-year-old female, and the heart now beats life into a 66-year-old male,” added Gianelli. In addition, eyes, skin, bones and heart valves were also recovered for transplantation.
The New York Organ Donor Network officials offered a special thanks to the staff of the surgical intensive care unit, the operating room, social work and hospital administration for helping this patient leave a lasting legacy: “Your cooperation and dedication to saving lives truly made a difference for these recipients and their grateful families.”
There are more than 100,000 persons in the United States waiting for a donated organ. The New York Organ Donor Network saves lives through organ and tissue donation. For additional information on the New York Organ Donor Network, please call 1-800-GIFT-4-NY, www.donatelifeny.org.
