NUMC Physician Receives Prestigious APA-SAMHSA Fellowship

East Meadow, N.Y., June 23, 2021 – Dr. Ulziibat Person, of Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), has been awarded the APA-SAMHSA Fellowship for 2021. Dr. Person is the first physician at NUMC to receive this prestigious award, which will fund her groundbreaking research into substance abuse and mental health disparities for underserved communities.

Nassau Health Care Corporation is proud to announce that Dr. Ulziibat “Uzi” Person, of NUMC’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, has been awarded the APA-SAMHSA Minority Fellowship for 2021. This competitive fellowship is funded by the American Psychiatric Association and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Dr. Person is the first NUMC physician to receive this prestigious award.

The APA- SAMHSA Minority Fellowship provides funding to psychiatry residents that are committed to addressing minority psychiatric metal health issues, including substance use disorders. Dr. Person’s research will focus on reducing health disparities and improving behavioral health care outcomes for racial and ethnic populations, ensuring humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental illness. Following her award and her continued contributions to the field of psychiatry, Dr. Person has been promoted to Chief of Research for the Addiction Services at NUMC.
