NUMC PARTICIPATES IN AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION “DIABETES ALERT DAY” TO ASSESS RISKS AND PREVENT COMPLICATIONS
East Meadow, NY… Nassau University Medical Center is proud to participate in Diabetes Alert Day on Thursday, March 24, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the NUMC lobby. During the period of March 24 to April 22, the American Diabetes Association will be rallying one million people to take the diabetes risk test. NUMC will be participating in “Join the Million Challenge” with a goal to encourage people to help stop diabetes by taking the diabetes risk test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and inspire their friends, family and colleagues to do the same.
Along with taking a diabetes risk test, Diabetes Alert Day will allow people to learn about diabetes and prevention methods. Individuals may also see the latest diabetes-related products, medications and devices.
“Untreated diabetes can contribute to a variety of serious health complications including diseases of the heart, kidneys, nerves and vascular system that can shorten your life. A coordinated approach to disease management is required in order to help control diabetes and prevent complications. These interventions can save your life, limbs and vision and protect your overall wellness,” said Kenneth H. Hupart, MD, FAACP, and chief of endocrinology at NUMC.
Starting on Diabetes Alert Day, you can be part of the movement to stop diabetes and get your free diabetes risk test (English or Spanish) by one of several ways: participating in Diabetes Alert Day at NUMC, visit stopdiabetes.com to take the diabetes risk test, call 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383), text JOIN to 69866 (standard data and message rates apply).
Although Diabetes Alert Day is a one day event at NUMC, the diabetes risk test is available year round. For additional information about this event and other diabetes education programs at NuHealth, please contact Tenekia Lindsay at 516-572-6573 or via email at tlindsa1@numc.edu.
