NUMC Opens Employee Center to Promote Staff Resiliency and Mental Health
New Facility Helps Ensure Employees at Long Island’s Largest Level One Trauma Center Remain Mentally
(EAST MEADOW, NY) – Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has officially opened its new, modern staff lounge designed to support healthcare workers’ mental health, resiliency, and well-being.
The new facility ensures the hospital’s devoted workforce, which treats more than 270,000 patients annually, has a dedicated space to decompress and recharge while working in one of the region’s most demanding medical environments.
“The new Relaxation Station reflects NUMC’s ongoing commitment to employee engagement and a prioritization of our employee’s mental health and overall wellness,” said Megan Ryan, President and CEO of Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC). “By providing a space where our hardworking team can take a brief reprieve during a long and demanding shift, we can help reduce staff burnout – a major issue challenging healthcare providers across the country. We are not only investing in our employees’ well-being but also enhancing the quality of care we provide to our patients.”
A recent study published in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery found that nearly 40% of trauma professionals experience symptoms of burnout, depression, or anxiety due to the intense emotional and physical demands of their work. These findings underscore the critical importance of mental health resources in trauma centers like NUMC.
The Relaxation Station provides employees a respite from their high-stress roles, particularly those working in NUMC’s 24/7 Level I Trauma Center, the largest in Long Island. Maintaining certification as a Level I Trauma Center requires round-the-clock excellence under the most rigorous conditions, making staff mental health and resiliency critical priorities for NUMC.
