NUMC OFFICIALS TO WARN PUBLIC ABOUT ANTICIPATED SPIKE IN DEADLY BOATING, SWIMMING AND SUMMERTIME ACCIDENTS

-Mother of Victim Killed in Boating Accident to Join Trauma Doctors in Press Conference-
EAST MEADOW, NY (June 20th, 2017) – Dr. Victor F. Politi, CEO and President of Nassau University Medical Center, will be joined by the mother of a victim lost in a boating accident, along with trauma doctors and ER specialists, in warning local residents not to fall victim to tragic, but avoidable, boating, swimming and summertime mishaps before the official first day of summer. The news conference will take place today, Tuesday June 20th, 2017 at 12 pm noon (Nassau University Medical Center Lobby 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, NY 11554). Nassau University Medical Center is the closest Level 1 Trauma Center to Jones Beach, one of the most popular summertime destinations in New York State with over 5 million annual beach-goers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide and is the leading cause of injury death among children ages 1 through 4 years old in the United States.

Among children, traumatic injuries normally double during summer months; and, for adults up to age 44, physical trauma is the leading cause of death. Adult trauma cases typically jump 25 to 30 percent during the summer period, which is commonly called “trauma season,” by medical professionals and first-responders.

The beginning of summer in June also marks the start for the busiest time of the year for boating and beach season on Long Island, which is surrounded by the Long Island Sound to its north and Atlantic Ocean to its south.

Resident doctors and administrators work directly with the Nassau County Police Marine Bureau and the U.S. Coast Guard in treating victims, especially as the summer season officially begins June 21st.
