NUMC OFFERS “SHOPPING SMART SUPERMARKET TOURS”, HOSTED BY THE ZAKI HOSSAIN CENTER FOR HYPERTENSION DIABETES AND VASCULAR DISEASE

East Meadow, NY… The Zaki Hossain Center for Hypertension Diabetes and Vascular Disease at the Nassau University Medical Center, is offering “shopping smart” local supermarket tours for the community, to promote healthy eating habits and to improve overall wellness for individuals, especially those suffering from diabetes. The tours will be given by Terry Gray, PhD, a nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator, at 2 p.m. on April 27, May 2 and May 4 at select locations. Participants will learn the following and more during the ninety minute tours:
• How to distinguish healthy from “non healthy” foods.
• How to interpret nutrition labels.
• How to maneuver the food aisles to find the healthier products.
• Decipher various health claims made by the food industry.
• Identify the best cuts of meats (lowest fat).
• How to examine fresh fish.
• Proper portion sizes.

The supermarket tours will take place on the following dates at  select locations:

April 27th at 2 p.m. at Pathmark
1764 Grand Avenue, Baldwin, NY 11510

May 2nd at 2 p.m. at Stop & Shop
150 Fulton Avenue, Hempstead, NY 11550

May 4th at 2 p.m. at Stop & Shop
248 East Sunrise Highway, Freeport, NY 11520
