FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NUMC NOMINATES CHRISTINE MANCUSO, RN, BSN, NURSE MANAGER FOR THE NUMC BREAST IMAGING CENTER, FOR THE 2009 NASSAU-SUFFOLK HOSPITAL COUNCIL, INC. NURSE OF DISTINCTION AWARD

East Meadow, NY …Nassau University Medical Center has nominated Christine Mancuso, RN, BSN, and nurse manager for the NUMC breast imaging center, for the Nassau -Suffolk Hospital Council Nurse of Distinction award.  Ms. Mancuso has been an employee of NUMC for over twenty-five years.

Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation, was delighted to announce the well-deserved nomination and stated:  “Our candidate for the Long Island Nurse of Distinction Award oversees our New York State Department of Health Cancer Screening Grant and is the Nurse Manager of our Breast Imaging Center, which includes oversight of our mobile mammography van.  She is a long-time advocate for cancer screening services for our uninsured and under-insured population.  Her passion for over 30 years has been women’s health issues.  It is an honor to nominate such an exemplary nurse for this most prestigious award.”

“A registered nurse since 1972, Ms. Mancuso has worked in public health for her entire career.  She is the ultimate professional who expects the same from all levels of staff and always strives to create a patient centered model of care.  She maintains good communications with all disciplines to foster the highest expectations and quality outcomes for her patients.”

NUMC’s candidate maintains partnerships with other stakeholders in the community and chairs regular meetings to address ongoing issues.  This year has been particularly difficult with projected budget cuts but our candidate has tackled the issues head on by coming up with creative ways to screen more patients and stretch every dollar. Her advocacy leads her to seek fundraising activities that will benefit our programs and enable us to better serve our communities.

A graduate of Villanova University, Ms. Mancuso serves on the board of advisors of the regional chapter of the American Cancer Society and has been a former president.  She chairs our Corporation’s participation in the annual Revlon Run and represents the Long Island region on the NYSDOH Cancer Services Program Partnership Council.  She also reviews grants for the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure.  She has always actively participated in our own “Nurse Week” preparations and is currently working on our institution’s smoking cessation initiative.

Kathy Skarka , MSN, RN, CNA, and Vice President for nursing added:   “Ms. Mancuso has demonstrated 30 years of commitment, compassion and caring to the patients she serves.  Her special quality extends far beyond the walls of the Medical Center as she participates in significant outreach programs to promote healthy living with a focus on women’s health.”
